It’s a feature for all of us that work in Central London.
With rent and travel prices always on the rise (and the northern line never getting any better!), it’s a natural part of our lives. But could it be better? What if we could save two hours a day – better spent working, or maybe in bed!
Below are five recruitment companies that have done just that. Either based outside of Central London, or with offices in the home counties, these employees have stopped complaining about the Northern Line, and started using their time, and money, more wisely.
At nearly four years old, Tiro Partners have built a unique boutique recruitment company based right on Clapham Common. Sitting at just under 10 headcount, Tiro is run by William Excell and Paul Conaghan who have 25 years combined recruitment experience at leading Global Recruitment Companies. Their office is an open-plan, modern and light space with well-equipped shared meeting rooms and immediate space for some brand new starters!
Tiro Partners have established themselves as technology experts in project and product management, businesses analysis, architecture, development and testing. They work across a wide range of industries including Media, Retail, Publishing, Finance, Mobile and Digital. They are growing fast and want to build on their team of 7, both in new business roles and resourcing. They offer all the perks (pension, private health, discounted gym), plus the opportunity for equity, and excellent founder-led training.
Tiro is a dynamic environment where you’re supported but without the heavy KPIs. Brighton is Proco Global’s Head office, where it all began back in 2008. They have 20 people permanently based there, as well as EMEA employees often on-site as they are free to work from any office. Fridays in the summer get very busy!
They are based in the North Laine area, so it’s great for lunchtime shopping and it is only about a 7 minute walk to the beach. There are 2 gyms really close by with pools that the team frequent. The office has a dress down vibe, and from May onwards you will find most people sporting flip flops (although it’s not compulsory!).
Brighton is as important as any of Proco Global’s office locations. As it is the head office, opportunities are constantly developing. It acts as a global hub for the whole business with shared opportunities across the whole of the Supply Chain, and it’s only an hour into central London by train. Consultants in Brighton have significantly lower travel and accommodation costs – but with the support and network of a truly global and high fee-size recruitment business.
Brighton is the obvious location for the EMEA Summer party (which has a reputation for being a little different!).
Whether its rolling down the South Downs in a huge inflatable, riding on an open top bus through the Sussex countryside, competing in the Proco Olympics on Hove Lawns, dancing flamenco on stage in the best Tapas restaurant in town, enjoying numerous winners dinners at some of the coolest restaurants in Sussex like the South Lodge, Salt Rooms & The Coal Shed or even learning how to make cocktails on a Friday half-day at the office – they do it all!
Every Proco office worldwide has free lunch delivered on the first day of every month, and in Brighton the amazing healthy food is prepared by T.V. Chef Stacie Stewart.
Investigo is in a unique position as a London-based boutique professional services recruitment company with an incredibly strong regional offering. Their regional offices are state-of-the-art, with clients ranging from Tesco to Easyjet. As clients are often based in commercial or industrial parks – they often use the Investigo offices for interviews and to meet candidates. This certainly helps with securing exclusive roles!
Regional consultants bill very similarly to those based in London. It is a very relationship driven approach to recruitment and you’ll often socialise with clients and candidates out of work, maybe more than you would in London. Clients are open to relocating candidates, and the global Investigo database lends itself to this. Most regional recruiters have a deposit on their own home, and all are within an hour commute to central London.
The culture at Investigo’s regional offices is a little more relaxed than other city recruitment firms. You really become part of the community and inevitably end up spending time with clients and candidate outside of work. There are strong ties with the rest of the business, and regional staff go on all the same inventive trips as everyone else, in fact many have been on more!
Following the expansion of their C&I Division and the success of regional offices in Manchester and Edinburgh; Reading was a natural choice to for McGregor Boyall’s next regional hub. Opening in June 2015, the Reading office supports new and existing clients across the areas of IT, Change & Transformation, BI & Analytics, Digital, HR & Talent Management, Procurement, Marketing, and SAP.
The offices are super modern based in the leafy Green Park, easily accessible from the M4 and other major routes into Reading and with free parking. It’s managed by Al Brown who has over 10 years IT Recruitment experience in the Reading area (and an impressive beard!).
The Reading business is growing incredibly fast. There are currently four teams, still with huge opportunity for growth within the IT and further afield. For senior consultants and above looking to build out their own sector, you have the full support of an established brand, but still with a relaxed management style. McGregor Boyall has NO THRESHOLD, and pays up to 25% on billings, with state of the art systems and full job board access.
McGregor Boyall has a great collaborative culture, and this is one of the core businesses values. It’s relaxed but still a driven environment, and all incentives and social events are UK wide. They run monthly sales clubs with rewards for hitting various thresholds. Rewards are provided as points into an online account where they can be spent on anything from an iPad to an all-inclusive holiday, dining out to Amazon vouchers. Originally, the Brighton Office was opened to accommodate Stott and May’s highest performers who were making a daily two-hour round trip every day to London. There is now three consultants focussed on cyber-security, and they are looking to grow both within this space, and more widely across information technology – benefiting from a strong existing network within the business. Opening the Brighton office was a classic example of how Stott and May both look after their staff, and how they support entrepreneurialism. The opportunity to work for Stott and May in Brighton is phenomenal. Working with the biggest billers in the business in a small and fast-growing team, as a senior recruiter you really have the opportunity to carve your own path with a huge amount of support. Working in Brighton means that your cost of living becomes significantly lower whilst your billings stay the same (as the others in the office have proved!). Commuting into London is incredibly easy a day a week if you need to.
