Who are Wilbury Stratton?

Wilbury Stratton is a global intelligence platform. What does this mean? Really, we are a research and executive search business. About 50 percent of the work we do is insights-based. We assist clients in better understanding their market, their competitors or their client base. The balance is straightforward retained, senior-level headhunting. Our research teams are defined by their rigour, precision and attention to detail. Each researcher specialises in a particular industry and has an extensive list of executive-level contacts. There’s no great mystery to how we work. We pick up the phone and talk to people. Our multi-lingual researchers conduct thousands of in-depth interviews. Sources include C-suite executives, talent managers, HR professionals, journalists, consultants ... anyone who can provide us with the knowledge and insight our clients require. We analyse the data we've mined and produce 'boardroom-ready' reports for our clients.

Over a third of the FTSE 100 rely on our research to make informed decisions on the strategic direction of their business.

Culture

Wilbury Stratton is made up of a diverse and very close-knit group of people from a variety of backgrounds. From entrepreneurs to lawyers to established executive search consultants to fresh out of university, we work incredibly well together to come up with creative solutions to everything. Our week begins with a Monday morning meeting – we talk openly and honestly about the state of each project and work together to mend issues (of which, thankfully there are only a few). Our end-of-week ritual begins with a company-bought breakfast (usually from Pret) and we finish early to head down to the pub – all expenses paid. We have a resident quiz master – Ashleigh – who organises sporadic Pub Quizzes which we host in the office, drinks supplied by our MD & master sommelier Dan Chester.

What we want to achieve in 2019

In order of priority: 1. People - we've put in a lot of hard work so far already to improve our People Development plans and aren't stopping there... lots to reveal and roll out for 2019 - to grow our Sales and Research teams 2. Process - we've invested in new technologies to help us work more efficiently and deliver even better service to our clients 3. Business Growth - we've grown steadily year on year and have closed 2018 over-target. For 2019, we have set ourselves an ambitious figure to reach and are fully committed to the first two points which will help us achieve this.

How we are structured

The business is split into two parts; Sales and Research. Sales is pretty self-explanatory - winning the projects, building relationships, all that good stuff. The research team is responsible for delivering all projects that are won by the sales team. Delivery includes: - Primary and secondary research on the relevant subject - Engaging with candidates, market sources and anyone else relevant to a project - Working in partnership with the Sales team to ensure we know what the client wants; we often also liaise directly with clients - Writing update reports for clients at key points in a project - Writing a final report - Working with Jo (our designer) to create the finished report - Presenting our findings to the client – usually a face-to-face meeting - Candidate management where appropriate (more on this later)

Alex Cheney, Sales Director

Alex has been Sales Director at Wilbury Stratton since 2013 and has been in headhunting/search for over 20 years. He took a short break from this to set up and run the UK's largest chain of family entertainment centres and a start-up games company.

Matt Pitt, Research Director

Matt is head of the research team and claims, somewhat dubiously, that he has been at Wilbury Stratton since 1973. He's been building and leading research platforms for most of his career.

WS gives back

For 2019, we have decided to partner with the SPEAR charity. SPEAR works with seriously disadvantaged 16- 24 year olds, delivering an intensive 6 week training programme to help get them into employment and then mentors and works with them for the next year. They are based in Brighton and are delighted to be working with us as they look to work with local businesses who can help provide things like interview training, presentation training and general career advice. It will give us the opportunity to become really involved with the programme and add lots of value outside of the sponsorship element; the majority of the individuals taking part come from very disadvantaged areas of the local community so the impact feels very real for everyone getting involved. We will be sponsoring 4 young adults during the year. I hope will provide a lot of opportunity for you to make a difference. - Dan Chester
