Ellwood Atfield

What Hunted Says

Ellwood Atfield do so much more for their fascinating industry of PR & Communications than the recruitment day job. They're driving best practice in communications and supporting the quest for improved diversity & equality. They’ve done this by diversity reporting, launching the industry's largest diversity survey, and establishing the Women in Communications Career Networking Group. They also know how to treat their consultants right with EA Air Mile rewards, paid sabbatical after 5 years, treat trolley Friday, and summer working hours. No client or candidate ownership, great leadership and their One Team approach has led to cracking staff retention and smiles all round the office!

About Us

We are the communications and advocacy headhunters. Our candidates work in the most influential offices in Europe and influence how their organisation functions, communicates and is perceived. We are the communications and advocacy headhunters. We recruit the people responsible for an organisation’s communications, reputation and influence. We love what we do, and are good at it.

The opportunity

We're growing! Our ambitious expansion plans mean we're currently hiring several positions across different levels of seniority - from Graduate Trainees to Senior Consultants and beyond. We'll provide the training, tools, network and industry knowledge to ensure you're fully supported in your role. Our Consultants manage the full recruitment life cycle, with many producing thought-leadership reports and hosting networking events in addition to the day job. If you are smart, proactive, engaging, interested in the world around you, and highly ambitious, then we will help develop your career in headhunting so you can deliver the best results possible and make yourself a lot of money (while having a lot of fun!).

Our team

We have an enviably high staff retention rate with an average tenure over 3+ years. Our team of 28 consultants & support staff work across three practices and embody our "One Team" approach. We don't have client or candidate ownership and work in a truly collaborative way, ensuring a great outcome for customers and a supportive working environment for the team (without KPIs!). Some colleagues have joined us from careers in communications including our Chairman, an ex-FTSE 100 Communications Director. Others have come from PR agencies, HR, law and other recruiters. There's no one "type" of EA consultant - some of the team enjoy debating politics non-stop, others discuss the media while others love business. Outside of work a number of us frequent our local pub, 'The Mog', others run marathons, play lacrosse, watch plays, attend political debates and travel the world. What binds us professionally is a shared passion for working hard, having fun and delighting our customers.

Career progression at Ellwood Atfield

Ironically, we find it quite challenging hiring people for the business. It’s down to what it means to be a consultant at EA and how different we are compared to many other recruitment firms. It’s not for everyone, but if you can see another way, then maybe EA is the place for you. The leap from a ‘numbers game’ recruiter to EA consultant is a huge one, the first 6 months here will likely be the hardest of your professional career to date. Not because you’ll feel isolated, unsupported, or pressurised, indeed quite the opposite. It is because of the brilliant people you’ll be surrounded by, the support you’ll get and the expectation that you return that support by delivering a quality EA shortlist every time. If that scares you, then you’re probably already in the right place. If it excites you, then you should probably give us a call.

Training & Development

In order to ensure we retain the best recruitment talent in our industry we recognise the importance of regular training and development. The team at EA takes part in weekly in-house training sessions run by the Leadership practice and external experts. We're also in the process of developing bespoke personal development plans to ensure the progression of our employees is fully supported. We take career development seriously and we expect you to be willing to challenge yourself to progress to the next level - after all, who wants to tread water?

Diversity & CSR : How we drive best practice

For most of us working in recruitment we want to do more than simply placing people in jobs. Of course we love to do just that, but at the same time we want to ensure we're doing right by our industry and supporting the quest for improved diversity & equality. Here's a snapshot of what we're doing to help: - Diversity reporting as part of our shortlists - Sponsorship of the Speaker's Parliamentary Internship Programme, an initiative to encourage young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to pursue careers in Government - Sponsorship of the National Council for Voluntary Organisations, the charity membership organisation. EA plays an active role in driving best practice in the NFP communications space - Established the Women in Communications Career Networking Group for current & prospective female leaders in comms - Launched the EA Coaching Network as a way of increasing leadership capabilities We have also just launched the industry's largest diversity survey. More to follow...

A fond farewell from Patrick

I’ve been at EA for two years. My previous job was with a big generalist recruitment firm. But I found some methods of ‘quantity over quality’ were not aligned to my values. I knew the KPIs and ‘call sessions’ made clients fed up with the textbook high-street recruiter I had become. I wanted to be more consultative and add real value. Meeting EA, I was immediately blown away by the depth of knowledge and experience – it made me realise how much I was fudging it (unintentionally) as a recruiter so far! Being surrounded by immense support at EA has really helped me to learn. The focus is always on delivering the best service possible. Yes, as a recruiter you need to demonstrate results, but our mission is to do a great job and listen to our customers’ needs. At EA I recruit roles with impact and purpose – I’ve helped organisations hire people who change the public perception of an entire industry, which could even influence the outcome of general elections - and that’s pretty incredible.

The perks

On top of our fabulously generous commission structure we offer a great selection of perks: - 25 days holiday (plus extra discretionary days over the Christmas and New Year period) - Extra day off for the company birthday - Pension - Genuine flexible working options - Summer hours - Private medical insurance - Death in service pay-out - iPhone (for work and personal calls) - Paid sabbatical after 5 years’ service - Team celebrations - from our upcoming whole company trip to Paris to the best restaurants in town, when the team hits target, the team celebrates. And even if we don’t hit target, we still go for pizza - EA Air Mile Rewards (flight vouchers for destinations of your choice) - We spend more on marketing than any competitor. This makes your job (and earning commission) a lot easier - There is always a lot of fruit and normally a substantial amount of cake in the office - A treat trolley from 4pm on Fridays Plus, in-house training & personalised development plans.

ellwood atfield gallery

'A recruitment gallery' I hear you ask? Just one of our many USPs... The ellwood atfield gallery is the first gallery dedicated to exploring the role, character and importance of communications. Distinct industries and disciplines that evolved during the 20th century – advertising, marketing, corporate communications, branding, media, public relations, internal communications, public affairs – are converging. The gallery seeks to stimulate debate about comms in the 21st century. Since its launch in 2013, our exhibitions have attracted high profile individuals from the world of politics & commerce. The exhibitions form an important part of our thought leadership and ensure we're always at the centre of our community. The gallery regularly plays host to industry events including the EA Annual Political Cartoon Awards. Speakers have included Angela Knight CBE, Boris Johnson, David Cameron and Dame Tessa Jowell. At the very least, it's handy for name dropping over dinner/at the pub!

Progressing in Recruitment, and Trusting Your Gut

Like many people, recruitment was not a career I had considered until I found myself during the financial crisis as an unemployed (fairly clueless) graduate. After a wonderful 7 years, I decided that I would follow the strategic advice that I offered my candidates and develop my skills elsewhere. Two months in at EA, I am both relieved and delighted that so far every expectation has been realised and I’m pleased that I trusted my gut instinct. At the risk of sounding like the office creep, I have been particularly impressed that the leadership and team of Directors here (most of whom come from a public affairs or communications background) roll up their sleeves as much as the new starters. As such, the reciprocal relationships that have been nurtured over time has resulted in an extensive network of communications professionals who truly trust and have bought into the people-centric ethos of EA. I have never had so many LinkedIn requests nor felt quite so popular!

Our clients

We work with the leaders of Communications functions and HR professionals to resource PR, Communications & Public Affairs professionals for clients across multiple industry sectors. Key clients include: Deliveroo, Financial Conduct Authority, Ford, Kingfisher Plc, McDonald's, Network Rail, NSPCC, Prudential Plc, Sainsbury's, Uber, Westminster City Council and WWF.

Our market place

Communications is all about the power to make or break brands, transform and protect reputation, bring about policy changes and turn start-ups into global multi-million-pound businesses. It ensures that everyone in the business is singing from the same hymn sheet, and builds and maintains strong relationships with investors, clients, customers, the public, governments, and regulators. We know communications and advocacy, and we recruit every member of the communications team, from media to policy and public affairs, headhunting all the way up from junior to CEO level.
